Don't know what this is?!

by kimmermer, Jun 29, 2008 06:06PM
Hi there, today is Sunday June 29th, on Friday June 27th at around 12:30 in the morning, I woke up with a bad upset stomach, and vomited everything I had ate that day Since then I have been week, no fever, no appetite, lots of nausea, extremely watery diarrhea twice today.
It was my last week of work this past week, and all of our staff was eating out different places and had a lot of things. I am not sure if I may of got food poisoning from somewhere, or if I have the flu. About two years ago I had my gall bladder out, I am not sure if that affects anything. I don't really know how I should treat this, I am having trouble taking in food and fluids, and don't know how long I should wait with this until I go to the hospital? I am not pregnant, I just finished my time of the month and I am on the pill and my husband also uses protection.

Vomiting and Diarrhea.

Almost always a viral related illness. Usually goes away on it's own.

What to do at home:
Don't panic.
Drink sips of water. Not large gulps. Aim for 8 ounces an hour. A few good sips during commericals is what I tell my patients.
It will probably go away but you might feel like hell for a day or so.

When to go to the hospital:
If your vomit or diarrhea becomes blood. Notice I did not say a streak of blood or a drop of blood. If your vomit looks like coffee grounds that counts as blood. If you are an alcoholic, have known ulcers, are old, or are taking blood thinners this especially applies to you.

Fever is significant with vomiting and abdominal pain. Too much to go into here but if your are vomiting, have fever and belly pain then it's time to see a doctor. Fever here not meaning feels hot. Fever means I took my temp with a real thermometer and it's more than 100 degrees.
