Everything’s Fallen--I Want it Back Up!

I’ve just been diagnosed with a large cystocele, urethrocele, rectocele, a milder enterocele, prolapsed uterus, and occult stress incontinence.  The bulging of from the multiple prolapses feel like I’m crowning a baby every time I have a bowel movement or strain. I can’t evacuate my bowels without manual assistance; I have constant bladder/urethral symptoms along with sexual pain issues.

The problems started with the delivery of my son 21 years ago. He was a forceps delivery.  I tore something terrible, but the doctor did no repair work. My tailbone even was broken along with my son’s collar bones. Every year it’s become worse in spite of my attempts to strengthen my muscles with Kegals.

I was looking forward to surgery and some relief, but the more I read about repair surgeries the more nervous I get. It doesn’t sound like a good outcome is possible; the best you can hope for is trading one problem for another. Is it possible to return to some semblance of anatomical order while restoring continence and still be able to have an enjoyable sex life?

Hi Sandi,
I have been there and while I have had 4 surgeries for prolapses, I still say find a good doctor and start asking those questions.  The thing that I think set me up for my prolapses, besides like you a big baby and a I think a not very good episiotomy fix, is that I had a vaginal partial hysterectomy.  They took my cervix and uterus in 1997.  I was good for about 9 years and developed bladder, rectocele.  But also may I say, constipation was always a problem.  I did the worse thing and that was strain.  So now, having done the TOT, enerocele repair with mesh,  cystocele repair, and a sigmoid resection because it was redundant, I do feel better.  I am 55.  I also have enjoyed good sex after each surgery.  I did have a great doctor who specializes in mature women and a great colo rectal surgeon who did a laparascopic resection approx. a week ago.  Go to pelvicfloor.com and read about some of the good and bad.  Maybe someone can give you some advice on a good doctor.  Don't rush into it though, I asked a million questions and yes I was disappointed everytime something else happed.  But get in tune with your body, write down your symptoms, find good doctors and good luck to you.  My heart goes out to you as I know what you are gonig through.
