Hi Wanda,

A pessary is a silicon device placed inside the vagina to hold up one or more areas of prolapse.  They come in a variety of shapes and sizes so if you are being fitted make sure your doctor is familiar with all of the various options available.  The pessary device is generally quite safe, however, there are some risks.  If the pessary is neglected, i.e. not removed periodically it can cause problems such as infection, or even erosion into the bladder, bowel, or rectum. If you are wearing the pessary most all the time plan on seeing your doctor at least once every three months.  It is a good idea to let loved ones (you children) know you are wearing it so that (heave forbid) something happens to you that caused incapacitation they can communicate with care givers and the pessary can be removed.  Warning signs to look out for while wearing a pessary include: pain, vaginal bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge.  Many patients use a pessary device long term and are able to insert and remove the device them selves.  Good luck
