Repeated UTI and Yeast Infection?

by luckygirl2007, Jul 30, 2007 12:00AM
I am a 44 years old female. About 2-3 yrs ago, the cyst on one of my ovaries popped, causing much pain, however, I didn't get it removed (doctor didn't suggest any medical actions on my part). I have also had repeated UTI for the past 4 years now. I have had UTI before, but never very frequently before I moved to a tropical region in the South 4 yrs ago. I experience tightness in my abdomen, urgency to urinate, difficulty to urinate, frequency in urination, and the symptoms worsen with standing during times when I get UTI. My mother and grandmother have had UTI before, but very infrequently. My doctors have been telling me that it's UTI and then vaginal yeast infections. My questions are:
1. Do my symptoms suggest UTI or yeast infections?
2. In my last visit to doc. for UTI, he told me its bladder infection this time. Can repeated UTI eventually cause damage to the kidneys?
3. Do my repeated UTI signify cancer?
4. What kind of tests should I try to determine what's wrong?
5. I also feel itching in the pubic area, but can't see anything. Can feel little bumps though. Doc suggest yeast infection, but treatment didn't work. What could it be? I married and faithful for almost 20 years now.

Thank you very much.

TO have a UTI you need to have a positive urine culture. That is where your urine is cultured for 3 days, and the bugs are identified, and the drug sensitivities are listed so your doctor can treat you aith an appropriate antibiotic. This is different from the Urinalysis, which takes a few minutes to do, which is insufficient to diagnose a bladder infection. Many times women will have symptoms of urinary frequency and urgency, but it is not a bladder infection, but something else like overactive bladder syndrome, or even pelvic floor muscle trigger points. Yeast infections do not give bladder symptoms usually. Get the urine culture, and if this is negative, then ask about treatment for overactive bladder syndrome, and pelvic floor trigger point therapy. If the culture is positive, get treated with an appropriate antibiotic, and return for a test of cure in 2 weeks to make sure the bug was eradicated.
