2 yr. old has lump in groin

My 2 yr old son has a grape sized lump in his groin near his right testicle, but a bit higher. I noticed it at bathtime. It is hardly noticable otherwise, but can still be felt.It is firm but not completely solid. My wife and i thought he may have an inguinal  hernia so we immediately took him to the pediatrician. He says it is not a hernia , but thought it may be a testicular cyst. We are scheduled to see the urologist in two weeks for ultrasound and bloodwork and are told to expect surgery. Two weeks seems so far away ,and I am extremely worried due to family history of cancer, and a 15 yr old cousin with hodgkins.I was hoping maybe it was just a hydrocele but is he to old for this? It feels too hard to be fluid. Could this be something serious at his age?

It is difficult to say without proper examination.

Possibilities can include a lymph node, cancer, hydrocele, cyst, or varicocele.  The ultrasound and/or a pelvic CT scan would be a reasonable approach to diagnosing the mass.

A hydrocele is certainly possible in a 2-yr old.

As for whether this is serious or not - one would have to await the results of the imaging studies first.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
