A potential prostate issue?

by catch-22, Oct 06, 2004 12:00AM
I have some symptoms that are troubling me and I'm wondering what the cause might be.  I am a 29 year old male with no history of any health problems and relatively thin.  The major symptom profile is below:

1.  Dribbling immediately after urination - not a ton, but enough to create a very small wet spot on my underwear

2.  Increased need to urinate - i'm urinating 7 - 9 times per day.  Each time I urinate is not always very much.  Sometime I urinate once an hour and the latter is usually not very much urine.  Every other day this urination occurs at about 7am, but at times when I wake up (at 830) I don't have to go again

3.  Nocturnal urination - I've had 2 instances within 6 months of each other after drinking late night beverages (coke) within 30-45 minutes of going to bed.  1 time I started to urinate and then woke up.  The second time I urinated for 5-7 seconds before waking up and then going to restroom to complete.

I don't have any burning sensation associate with any of these instances.  I have a diagnosed anxiety problem and have seen doctors (for my anxiety symptoms) including full neurological workups and cardiology workups.

I'm on Lexapro (for the anxiety) and propecia (for hair loss).  I'm worried that this might be a sign of something bad.

Thank you.

Couple of things to consider.  The first would be an infection - either UTI or prostate infection - or a metabolic disease like diabetes.  A simple urinalysis can evaluate for infection, and a blood test can be done to evaluate for diabetes.

If these diseases have been ruled out, the prostate should certainly be carefully examined - via a digital rectal exam.  I would also consider tests for kidney dysfunction - which can also be done via a blood test or imaging with an ultrasound.

You may want to consider a urology referral for further discussion.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
