After Varicocele Surgery

Hello,

My husband had surgery for his Varicocele about a week and a half ago.  His right side has gone back to normal but his left side is harder and twice the size as his right, it also is hanging a lot higher than the right.  I am very concerned and I wanted to know if it is a sign that something is wrong.  We are also trying to have a child and I was wondering how a complication like this could affect us.  I appreciate any information you can give us.  Thank You.

Hello,

Thank you so much for answering my question.  I just have one more.  If my husband does have any of these complications that you mention, are they easily treatable and will they affected us trying to conceive?  Thank you for your time.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in. Some amount of swelling and discomfort are common after varicocele repair. It will take 3-4weeks for complete recovery. After this period, if swelling is persistent then a visit to the urologist would be necessary. The possible complications include bleeding, recurrent hydrocele, infection etc.
I would suggest that your husband visits a urologist after a week if he notices no improvement in the swelling.
Best.
