Am I home free

by jayblue2, Jun 17, 2008 09:34AM
Just had my 13 weeks 1day Hiv test (rapid Finger *****) and came out negative. But my Doc advised me that I had a low potassium level of 3.4mmol/litre. he said it was nothing to worry about as there was nothing wrong with my kidney, I was not daibetic and as such I should eat a ot of fruits especially bananas. i was wondering if this could affect the HIV result. Thanks

Hi,

Patients who turn out to be HIV positive usually have high potassium levels. However, It is unlikely that the test was affected by the serum potassium level.

Potassium can get washed out with increased frequency of urination or urinating larger volumes of fluid.

Yes, you will need to take greater quantities of fruit since the potassium is so low.

Values of potassium less than 3.5 are dangerous in that they can cause cardiac arrythmias.

Even tomatoes are a rich source of potassium so you may want to have tomato juice or salads.

Do keep us posted on your doubts and progress
