To answer your questions:
1) If you are getting recurrent urinary tract infections, one option would be to be placed on prophylactic antibiotics to prevent recurrent infection. This can be something like Bactrim or Macrobid on a prolonged basis. There is always the possibility that the bacteria may be resistant to the penicillin.
2) I am not aware of a mortality effect due to constant UTIs. Chronic infections however, can lead to incontinence and possible kidney damage.
