Atonic Bladder

On 11/26/03 I had a TURP procedure (urinary retention). I have not been able to urinate since this procedure. I self cathererize 4 times daily for the past 4+ weeks. Is it unusual to go this long without urinating? How long should I reasonably expect to wait before urinating? Will uninating resume after such a long delay?

Urinary retention is one of the more common short-term side effects after the TURP.  After the catheter is removed, patients often experience some pain or sense of urgency as the urine passes over the surgical wound. These sensations gradually subside. Complete healing takes about two months.

However, if you are not able to urinate after 4+ weeks, this does seem to be an extended period of time.  I would suggest seeing your urologist to ensure there was no further complication from the procedure.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
