Dear Kelly,
It sounds like your pediatric urologist has done the correct work-up to rule out any serious disease processes.  There is a common condition known as urethrorrhagia, that a has similar presentation to your description.  This condition is defined as urethral bleeding associated with dysuria occurring in boys.  Urine culture is negative, and the characteristic symptom is “ blood spotting on the undershorts”.  The symptoms and bleeding occur in intervals and may persist for years.  Treatment with lose dose long term antibiotics , although not scientifically indicated, may help, but not always.  Urethrorrhagia is benign and self-limited condition.  Usually reassurance by the urologist is the principle mode of therapy.
This information is provided for general medical educational purposes only.  Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options pertaining to your specific medical condition.  More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its satellites (1 800 653-6568).
Sincerely,
HFHS M.D.-AK
