BORN WITHOUT TESTICALS

by Liz__0__0, Feb 20, 1999 12:00AM

MY NEPHEW WAS BORN WITHOUT TESTICALS.  X-RAYS WERE DONE AND ONE WAS FOUND ON THE RIGHT SIDE BUT IT WAS ATROPHIED.  THERE WAS NO SIGN OF A UTERUS AND CHROMOSOME TESTS SHOW 46 XY, SO HE IS MALE.   HE IS FIVE YEARS OLD AND  HIS PENIS IS UNDERSIZED FOR HIS AGE.    MY QUESTION IS, HOW COMMON IS THIS OCCURRENCE AND CAN ANYTHING MEDICALLY BE DONE ABOUT IT?

Dear Liz,
Thanks for your question.
Your nephew may have a condition known as “vanishing testis syndrome” which occurs in approximately 1:20,000 males. During the pregnancy some derangement in normal testicular development occurs which results in either failed development of the testis or development and subsequent loss. Bilateral undescended testes is a far more likely condition and is not a diagnosis that can be made reliably without surgical exploration. He needs specialized pediatric urology consultation to adequately evaluate him. He may need hormone replacement therapy at some point to allow for adequate  male development.
This information is provided for general medical information purposes only. Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options pertaining to your specific medical condition. Dr. Steve Liroff at our institution has experience in pediatric urology and I would highly recommend that you see him for your problem. If you would like to make an appointment, please call us at 1-800-653-6568. We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any x-rays (not just the reports) as well as any physicians' notes and lab test results that you may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly.
Sincerely,
HFHS M.D.-A.T.
