Blood in Semen After Biopsy

by John Hanley, Sep 09, 1999 12:00AM
I had a prostate biopsy 7 days ago.  The doctor's information warned of the possibility of blood in the urine for up to a week, and semen for as long as one month.  My urine has been clear except for one day, about two days after the procedure, but ok since.  My semen has been very dark red upon ejaculating four days after the procedure, and six days after.  My question is whether this suggests an infection present, and whether it would be wise to refrain from sexual relations until the blood in the semen clears up.

Thanks.

Dear John Hanley,
Presence of blood in urine or semen after prostate biopsy is not unusual.  As your doctor told you it could take up to one month for the blood in semen to resolve.  Depending on the patient and the number of biopsy specimens (10 to 14 compared to the usual 6) obtained it could take even longer for the blood to be all gone.  Even though infection is possible, it is rare since the use of prophylactic (preventive) antibiotics, which you hopefully received. The usual signs/symptoms of infection may include fever, chills, burning and frequent urination, discolored/turbid and foul smelling urine, etc.  If you do have any symptoms you must contact your doctor
In the absence of symptoms such as above and no other problems, the mere discolored semen is to be expected following prostate biopsy. The dark red color will gradually change to brown overtime until it is all gone.
As far as needing to "refrain from sexual relations", it is unnecessary.  In fact it will take a certain number of ejaculations to clear the blood out of the prostate.
