Blood in Semen

Posted by Mark Silvestrin on July 02, 1999 at 12:44:22
I have found what looks to be blood in my semen he last couple days.  I have checked for lumps in my testicles, but found nothing abnormal.  There is no blood in my urine, and it does not hurt to urinate.  Any ideas what is causing this?

Dear Mark,
Thank you for the inquiry.  Anytime one sees blood in the semen or urine it is a signal there may be some underlying pathology worthy of investigation.  As a Urologist we see blood in the semen in a few circumstances i.e. after biopsy of the prostate,  invasive prostate cancer and possible urinary tract infections. The latter being the most common in young men.  Most of theses presentations are self limiting and benign,  but require attention of your physician for investigation.
Depending on your age it is probably also a transient, self limiting  inflammatory condition, but should be investigated  by your physician or a urologist with a physical exam, urinalysis, PSA serum test and possible ultrasound or cystoscopy especially if the condition continues past 1 week.
This information is provided for general medical education purposes only.  Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options to your specific medical condition.  More individualized care is available at Henry Ford Hospital and its urban campuses by calling(1 800-653-6568).
Sincerely,
HFHSM.D.-JS
