Blood when urinating

Blood when urinating

I am 63.  The following happened once about 8 months ago and again two days ago:  When urinating, I passed a small blood clot at the beginning of the stream followed by a small amount of blood after which the urine cleared.  The next few times I urinated there was a little more blood at the beginning of the stream.  After about a day there was no more blood visible.  What are the possible causes?  What are the possible consequences and their probabilities if I do nothing.  Is there any urgency in addressing this problem.  I am currently away from home for two more months and would prefer to wait until I get home before seeing a doctor.

Possible causes of blood in the urine can include a stone, prostatitis, a UTI, and various cancers - including bladder and prostate.

Workup typically would include a cystoscopy (to evaluate the bladder), an evaluation of the prostate (ultrasound as well as a rectal exam), and a CT scan to evaluate for kidney stones.

I cannot give an estimate on urgency without evaluation.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
