Bowenoid papulosis

by sm_sure, Aug 12, 2008 04:27AM
Hi, good doctors

I'm 40yo male, diagnosed clinically for Bowenoid Papulosis, without biopsy, treated with Laser. I wonder if it will be dangerous for my wife and child. In case we use the same bath and washing machine for clothes in house, is there any risk for them?

Regards

Hi,

Bowenoid papulosis occurs following HPV infection. This disorder may appear in association with genital warts.

HPV infection is transmitted sexually and if you had been infected with HPV prior to your wife becoming pregnant, it is possible that the infection could have been transmitted vertically from mother to newborn during parturition.

As the infection is transmitted sexually, it is safe to use the same washing machine to wash clothes of your close family members. However, it may be more hygienic to wash the child's clothes separate from that of the parents'.

You will need to go in for regular follow ups with your dermatologist (3-6 months) as the appearance of bowenoid papulosis can indicate the possibility of transformation into Bowen's disease, which is a precancerous lesion, even after ablative treatment with laser.

Additionally, your wife will need to have pap smears at regular intervals as specified by her OB/GYN to detect cervical cancer, if she has been infected with the HPV.

Do keep us posted on your doubts.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your exact reply. My son is about 7yo and I've got married 15 years ago, and up to 2 months ago I didn't have any signs regarding this problem. As for my wife so far has no problems even in her OB/GYN routine tests, so we will follow your guides.
Any other comment is warmly appreciated in advance.

Warmest regards.

Hi,

The fact that you were treated within a short time from the onset of symptoms is a positive in that it reduces the chances of recurrences or the possibility of transformation into Bowen's disease.

As the disease occurs in both genders, it would be good to have your wife screened for HPV infection. If she has had any genital warts, it is almost definitive that she has been infected with HPV.

The key to avoiding complications and a good prognosis is early detection and treatment.

Do keep us posted on your doubts.
