Actually though IC is more common in women then men, MEN DO GET IC AS WELL AND HONESTLY MEN WITH IC HAVE A MUCH HARDER TIME GETTING DIAGNOSED! Men with IC is getting a lot more attention now too since many think men with chronic prostititis that does not show infection,.at least many of them may actually have IC. I have also heard their symptoms can offer differ in that they have more urethral or penis pain! The advice I stated above still stands..., and I would
HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU LOOK ON BOTH THE ICN AND ICA FOR A NEW DOCTOR WHO TREATS IC OR IS AT LEAST MORE FAMILIAR WITH IT!!
I have spoken to many men with IC, and the most of the treatments used can help men as well as women. I believe instead of vaginal suppositories, they use rectal ones since like vaginally for women as well as rectally for me puts the meds right near the bladder muscle however the dosages are often adjusted since a greater amount of medication goes into your blood stream rectally. Heat as well as ice are also used for men or women. (Whether warm baths or using ice packs etc. BY the way Dr. Moldwin a big IC guru says to soak in a warm bath for 15min 3x day for urethral pain.) Kevin the compounding pharmacist at Dakota pharmacy specializes in treating IC patients, he can make urethral suppositories as well, that put the lidocaine and valium etc. right in the urethra itself. He will work with your physician and custom make meds that your doctor wants to use in them.
Also lidocaine gel, you need a script for it, but when I initial ask my URO for a script or for ideas to help treat my urethral pain, he said that a man is easier treat because you have a larger area to actually shoot the lidocaine in there and it will stay. he said this was true for both the lidocaine gel and the urethra suppositories.
Another treatment often used for IC is rescue instills of medications to numb and soothe the bladder. My URO developed using a technique in which I take the instill meds and drag the last 5 cc down to the urethra and slowly releasing it as I drag out the meds. If most of my pain was urethral the amount of meds released in that area was increased!
On the IC-Network they have an open discussion forum, and a thread set aside specifically for men. I apologize if by reading the info. that you felt this was only a womens disease..., I will definitely have to add a section to our website for men to make sure that no one assumes that they can't get it simply because they are a man!
I do hope you will consider some of the suggestions I have given you here..., obviously it is a little different for a man however I really think you need to find a uro that takes your pain seriously!!!
Have you ever tried the over the counter medication AZO? It turns your urine orange!
Of course like any medication makes sure you check with your doctor and tell them you are using it etc. They can tell you how much or how often it is safe to use as well. Another treatment Dr. Moldwin uses when other things fail is a low dose, like 2mg valium taken a couple really 2-3 times a day.
I do hope you get some help and relief from your pain!

I am a male believe it or not I might add.
I have Interstitial cystitis and this can include the symptoms you describe..
urethra pain is one of the things that cause me a lot of pain. Here is the link to our site where I wrote several article on treatment options for urethral pain.
http://moarkic.com/content/category/8/28/43/
If for some reason the link doesn't work you can go to moarkic . com
then to Patient Information and then treatment options. The information there will help you with urethral pain whether it is from IC or not however:
You might want to learn more about Interstitial Cystits/Painful Bladder syndrome
There are several great sites/organizations that can help you learn more about IC.
the ICA which is ichlep.org
the ICN which is ic-network.com
Our support group is set up mainly to network patients and medical practitioners throughout Missouri and Arkansas, but I have tried to put a lot of articles on the board to help any patient as well.
we are
moarkic.com it stands for mo for Missouri and Ark for Arkansas and of course IC
Elmiron had a website called allaboutic also .com
on the Elmiron site they have a questionnaire that you can take to your doctor that can help rule of if IC might be what is causing your urethral pain.
I hope that leads you to some information that brings you relief soon!
