Can Ditropan effect school performance and IQ?

by conie__0, Oct 10, 1998 12:00AM

My 6 year old daughter has hydronephrosis of the left kidney and a spastic bladder.  She had some problems at school in Kindergarten, so she was given an IQ test to check for any learning problems.  She tested at 138, gifted.  This was just before her diagnosis of hydronephrosis. 7 months later, she is on the Ditropan, she was tested and had an IQ of 101.  The school questioned if she might have a visual disability.  We had her vision tested and she passed.  The vision test was at 3:00 PM.
She takes 1/2 tsp(5mg.) at bedtime and in AM.
Can the medicine effect her vision for different periods of time throughout the day?  Would her vision possible be effected in the morning right after she takes the medicine, than possibly improve later in the day?
When we took her off her morning dosage, she was using the bathroom every 20 minutes and missing much of her assignments in 1st grade. Thank you for any information!

Thanks Connie for your question.
Ditropan is in the anticholinergic medication family and toxicity can cause blurred vision restlessness or even sedation.  To best avoid toxicity, one needs to be sure she is on the correct dose (we use  0.1-0.5 mg per kilogram per day). Administered in 3-4 fairly evenly spaced doses.   If these symptoms become more problematic you may ask her pediatric urologist for other medications which may help with less of these side effects.
More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its suburban campuses by calling  1 800 653 6568. We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any physicians’ notes and lab test results that you  may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly.
