Catheter Blockages and Suprapubic

My 85 year old dad has a foley in for a few months. It is getting blocked frequently with sedimentation and/or small blood clots. Are there any remedies to cut down the blockage? Urologist recommending insertion of suprapubic but dad has many health problems (cardiac, etc.) -- is this smart to do and will it really avoid problems?
