Cloudy Urine with Sedemient in 3 year old?

(I did post this in a different forum, as I wasn't sure which was the better place). We started potty training our daughter (3) in early August. Within days we noticed that her urine is often cloudy (I attached a photo of one of her pees, now that was first thing in the morning). After a few days of cloudy urine we took her to see about a UTI. As they were trying to get a urine sample from her, they did a quick strip in the tiny sample we got, which showed positive for white cells. Later on, we took her back after a better sample, and the urinalysis  came back negative. The problem seems to be ongoing however. Now, not every pee is cloudy, some are pretty clear, however they're always very yellow, always seem to have sediment floating in them, and many if not the majority are cloudy. Sometimes it almost even seems as though there's mucous or something in them, it's like you can see thicker streams of something floating down through the urine.

Now, she's on the small side, at 3 years 3 months she is still only 28 lbs, and doesn't like to drink a lot. In 24 hours on average she will take in:

- 8oz. milk
- 1 oz popsicle
- Anywhere from 10 - 16 oz of juice mixed with water (I mix it 50/50).

I know she needs more fluids, but we really struggle getting it into her. She's a former feeding tube baby, and we've always had eating challenges. She has no fever, no signs of pain when urinating, though I do find she often just goes small amounts, frequently.

Is it possible she has a UTI, or is this all caused by her lack of fluid intake, or could there be something else going on?

Were the doctors able to narrow down the results? My daughter is currently going through the same thing and we were told it could be normal. Still waiting for her results to come in. She also complains of back, rib and knee pain and for the last month she has been having low grade fever.  So scared it could be cancer signs.

Just checking in to see how your daughter is doing.  Hope all is well.

^^Thanks. We did that, with the more fluids. I also had read that high SG can cause false negative for leuks, and lo and behold, once she had more fluids, and her SG came down, her test showed positive +75 for leuks, and trace amounts of non-hemolyzed blood.

The doctor had her come into the hospital today for a urinalysis, so should have the results this week (they're not overly fast here).

If she is not getting a lot of fluids then her urine is going to be more concentrated and have a higher specific gravity.   I would try with more water to begin with. The test strip will also show if she has an infection or has blood or protein in urine.  If you are not confident in your doctors answers then go back and ask for a better explanation of his findings.  Sometimes, especially if we have already had health issues with our children, we get over concerned about little things.  Sometimes through persistence we find the right answers for our children.  I hope that you can find a solution to your concerns.

We've done 4 samples now, all on different times of the day, and they're all showing high SG (one was completely off the color chart for SG) and ascorbic acid.

I purchased some urinalysis strips, which showed the highest bar for Specific Gravity, and high Ascorbic Acid. Are these findings significant at all?

Thank you for your reply. We saw her pediatrician today, and i wasn't happy. He didn't even look at the sample I brought (I've attached a link to a photo of her urine from this morning, as I couldn't add it to this post). He said, "Oh cloudy urine is common in kids, we'll run a urinalysis." That was it. To my untrained eye, this amount of stuff in her urine does NOT look normal. Based on the photos, do you feel that we should seek another opinion?

This sample was her first morning pee.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,

Lack of fluid intake can cause cloudy urine. For cloudy urine, the other most common cause is stones in kidney which is blocking urine pathway. It can also be due to retention of urine anywhere in its flow due to obstruction. The obstruction can be due to abnormality of structures since birth, stones or diseases like tumors. So you should get done an ultrasound, CT scan and also urine examination and kidney function tests for your daughter.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

My 3 year old daughter has a fused labia and also noticed cloudy and sometimes smelly dark urine in some cases. I am hearing what you're saying about the obstruction or urine build up inside and now I'm thinking that her fused labia might be the cause of it. She also urines quiet frequently and sometimes in small amounts.  Either way, I will take her in to get checked and also see why the premarin cream has not yet worked on her fused labia. Thanks for the info!
