Corrective Surgery for Reflux

My daughter has grade 2 reflux.  She has had several breakthrough infections, even while on a series of prophylactic antibiotics.  Her urologist told my wife that we should consider corrective surgery at this point.  Can you tell me what the recovery is generally like for a 6 year old girl?  How long would her hospital stay most likely be?  And home care / time missed from school?  Thank you for your time.

Dear Rob
Thanks for your questions.
Children usually recover quickly from surgery. Hospital  stays are usually 3- 5 days.  Bladder spasms post operatively can be moderately painful in the first few days and  are treated with anticholinergic  (antispasmotic) and analgesic medications.  These meds are usually continued on an outpatient basis for a week or so.  A catheter will be left in the bladder for a day or so and is usually not  uncomfortable when removed.  Stents  ( small tubes which keep the ureters from being temporarily occluded from the local swelling immediately post op) are sometimes used.  These exit the skin near the incision and are removed on post op day two or three.   Stents removal can be briefly uncomfortable so pain meds ahead of time will help.    If surgery can be timed on Friday , fewer days of school can be missed.  Recovery for class work only is usually 7 days and play period a full 2-3 weeks on average.
You are welcome.  Hope recovery is quick .
