Delayed Puberty in Males

by Ryan__0__0, Feb 19, 1999 12:00AM

I am a 17 year old male who has a very young looking penis.  I
developed pubic hair when I was about 13, but puberty seems to have
stopped there.  My penis has not enlarged, nor have my testes.  I
am beggining to worry that they will never.  Can you give any
advice?  I have did some research on the net, but I havn't found
  much information.

Dear Ryan,
It is great that you can come forward and ask such a question. Certainly your concern needs to be addressed now. Waiting may effect the results of treatment if such is actually needed.
You really need to be seen by an endocrinologist. These physicians are the ones who evaluate and treat puberty problems. You can go to your family doctor and ask for the names of some of these specialists in your area whom he recommends.
For backround information, I would suggest that you look in one of the general pediatric textbooks. These may be available at the library and may be available at the library in your local hospital. Some of the conditions that they describe as causes for failure to enter puberty can be upsetting, so do not let your mind run wild. Get to a physician.
This information is provided for general medical information purposes only. Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options pertaining to your specific medical condition. The Division of Endocrinology at the Henry Ford Hospital has experience with difficult and involved problems such as you describe. If you would like to make an appointment  please call us at  (1-800-653-6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any x-rays [and pathology slides] (not just the reports) as well as any physicians’ notes and lab test results that you may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly.
Good luck!
