Different pain in penis

I first noticed that my urinary tract felt thicker in the length of the penis. It has now gotten much thicker and harder. There is a distinct thickness about 1" back from the tip. I was making love last week and experienced a sharp pain that just about killed the erection. There is no pain while urinating. No discharge. I called my doctor but he said keep an eye on it and kind of blew it off. Whenever I start to get an erection it begins to ache. FYI I took Viagra 3 times in the last year, never really liked it, could this be related in any way? Thanks/ Mike

Hello - thanks for asking your question.

There are several considerations for pain on erection.  The first would be any anatomical abnormality or nerve dysfunction.  

A second would be known as Peyronie's Disease.  It is thought to be caused by the development of hard, fibrous, inflamed tissue in the shaft of the penis, and usually starts as pain during erection, caused by stretching of inflamed penile tissue.

Less likely would be a condition known as priapism - the continual and pathological erection of the penis. It is usually caused by nonsexual factors such as spinal cord disease, leukemia or sickle cell disease, and, according to some reports, with the use of cocaine.

I would first be evaluated by a urologist who can examine you and consider a cystoscopy to evaluate any anatomical abnormality.  If that is non-revealing, then a neurology referral may help.
