Digital Rectal exam

I am 48 years old in good health and have been hearing about
the need to have my Prostate checked out. When I contacted the
HMO they said I would need a DIGITAL RECTAL EXAM. This is my
first. Also, I have never had my colon or any of checked
except by an ArMY doctor during a pre-draft exam.
Can these two procedures be included at the same time.
I scheduled an appointment for both and they only gave 15 minutes each. Also, is there any prep on my part ???

Dear Tad,
Routine prostate checks are reccommended after the age of 50. If you're are African American or have a family history of prostate cancer, some urologists recommended routine prostate exams starting at the age of forty. In regards to sigmoidiscopy, I don't know that this is indicated until the age of 50 unless there is blood in the stool or a family history.
A prostate check usually includes a rectal exam, which needs no preparation, and a PSA blood test. Prostate Awareness week is coming up and you could go to a near by center for information and a free screening. They can answer any of your further questions.
