Dull ache in testicles, lack of erection

by John-M, Sep 01, 1998 12:00AM

  Hello,
I have searched the archive but have not seen anything addressing my problem.  Here's the story: about 2 weeks prior to my problem I had been drinking and smoking more than usual..(I hardly ever drink or smoke).  One day I had masturbated and everthing was OK...however the very next day I experienced a warm, almost burning sensation in my testicles...also I found it very hard to get an erection.  I did not feel any pain or experience a trauma to evoke this change.. I have always been pretty healthy, and I am 21 years old.  Along with the warm feeling I have experienced a dull ache in my testicles for extended periods of time...not exactly painful but annoying enough so that i can feel it.  I saw a urologist who screened me for disease, poked me with needles, and gave me a rectal exam. His conclusion was that i was under stress and to give it time. I was not satisfied, so I went for a second opinion to a general practice physician.  He diagnosed me with epididimyis (sp?) and gave me a shot, (begins with R?) in the butt and gave me a weeks supply of dooxcycline (Vibramycin), I have taken the pills and feel less pain, but I still do not experience erections like i used to.  Before, my erections used to point straight up, however now i am lucky if I can get it hard enough to point straight out.  What is my problem?? I have always had a very good sex drive and good erections...I don't know what to do next?? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Dear John,
I don’t know that you had an infection which is what you were treated for by your general practitioner, but I’m not sure you are under stress either unless of course you feel that way.  I don’t have the benefit of a scrotal exam so it is difficult for me to comment without first hand experience.  I think your urologist was closer to the root of your problem.  This may be completely psychological.  There are several components that need to be in place to have a successful erection.  If you are overly concerned about having an erection  you may have difficulty having one.  I think the advice your urologist gave you was correct, give it time.  The only thing I might add is that anti-inflammatory medications sometimes work for non-specific pain in the groin and scrotum.  These medications include Motrin,  Advil, or Aleve.  You may want to try these over-the-counter medications and follow-up with your urologist.
If this discomfort persists, your doctor may want to order a scrotal ultrasound, but that is down the road if things don’t improve for you.  A urologist is trained to handle these types of problems and he or she can guide you in the right direction.
