Elevated PSA in 81 year old man

  hi,
  my dad went to the doctors to have his PSA level checked, he is 81 years old. The PSA came back as 12. His level in May was around 9. He has no symptoms and is generally in good health. I am concerned and wonder if I have the right to be, I also understand that PSA can be raised in other conditions other than Prostate cancer. His rectal examination in May was normal. Dear Karen,
The serum PSA of 12 ng/ml is abnormal and your dad may either have prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia or infection in the prostate.  Normal rectal examination is no protecton from prostate cancer.  Therefore I would recommend a consultation with a urologist and an ultrasound guided prostatic biopsy on your dad.  This will most certainly establish the diagnosis, and his future management plan can be scientifically tailored according to the findings of the biopsy.  
If cancer is found, considering the age of your father he may be a good candidate for watchful waiting, unless he is in pink of health and or his cancer is of aggressive type.  Other two diagnoses can be treated medically.  The discussion about the management at this time is bit premature since we do not know what is the diagnosis?
