Erratic PSA

Two years ago my PSA was less that 1.  A year later it was over 3 and rising fast so I had a biopsy.  Normal biopsy.   Six months later PSA is close to 1.  Three months later I had acute prostitutes.  Cipro therapy seemed to stop symptoms.  Now three months more lately my PSA is 7.8!   I am on Cipro again and will get a PSA in three weeks.  If I am elevated my urologist will probably want to do another biopsy.  What is the likely diagnosis?  Am I just having recurring prostitutes?   What is the likelihood of Prostate Cancer with a normal biopsy a year ago and intermittent high and normal PSA?

How are you?  There are 3 main reasons for a PSA to be elevated: infection, prostatic enlargement (BPH) or prostate cancer.  Biopsy is usually done to rule out cancer.  However, biopsy itself, rigorous physical activity affecting the prostate, such as bicycle riding, may cause a temporary rise in PSA levels and excessive doses of some chemotherapeutic drugs, may increase or decrease PSA levels. It is recommend that a high PSA should be repeated (between 6 weeks and 3 months after the high PSA) before taking any further action., It would be best to see your doctor for close follow-up to make sure a prostatic disease, specifically prostate cancer, is not developing. This link may be helpful: http://men.webmd.com/news/20030527/high-psa-level-check-again
