Genetics

Hi,

I just found out that I am related to my boyfriend. We are fourth generation so his grandpa's father is also my grandma's father. People say that if we have children, the odds of it being a normal child is almost impossible. Is this true ? Would it really affect us?

Thank you,

Akaponko

Hello,
This is called consanguinity. You can have normal children as genetic diseases usually pass on between first cousins or second cousins.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
