Hard Bulging Penile Veins

by Davejen, Mar 11, 2004 12:00AM
Two weeks ago I noticed a large hard bulging vein just below the head of the penis. It runs 3/4 of the way around the circumverance. I also have found two hard surface veins in the front running from the base to the tip. There is some pain when the veins are touched. I found this the next day after sex. I do take Viagra but otherwise very healthy. For the last two weeks I have abstained from sex hoping the situation would correct. I also have been taking aspirin and ibuprofin. Time and self treatment has not seemed to work yet. Is this condition dangerous? Will it go away by itself? Do I need to abstain from sex until it goes away?

One consideration would be penile vein thrombosis.  An ultrasound can be considered to make sure if this is the case.  Normally, anitinflammatories are prescribed and the event resolves in 4-6 weeks.  Studies do not show any subsequent erectile or sexual complications.

Regarding abstaining from sex, you may want to be examined by a urologist to make sure that it is nothing more than penile vein thrombosis.  If this is the case, then there should not be any contraindication to sexual activity.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
