Heavy Blood in Semen

I am a (just turned) 45 year old, seemingly healthy, monogamous married male. I noticed a heavy concentration of bright red blood in my semen exactly one week ago (9-25-05). I checked on-line for related topics and do not fully comprehend the possible reason(s)and/or the necessary steps to take to eliminate or ease the blood in my semen. I am not experiencing any discomfort or pain and the blood in my semen seems to be getting worse with each ejaculation. Since last Sunday, I have masturbated every other day in order to check the blood levels mixed with my semen. They continued to be very pronounced until I ejaculated today. I found the semen to be very "chocolate syrup-like". The semen was very brown with absolutely no red in colour. The semen did not have any unusual odor. I am quite "freaked" about this. I do not have a regular doctor and cannot seen by one until the end of October. Is there anyone whom can give me some peace of mind or can help enlighten me as to what to possibly expect?! Please explain in layman's terms.

Blood in the semen can be caused by infection or prostate disorders, amongst others.  There are some cases where the cause is benign, or cannot be found.  

To evaluate the prostate, a transrectal ultrasound can be considered to image for any signs of cancer.  You can also send off prostatic fluid and a urinalysis to look for infection.  A cystoscopy can also be considered to comprehensively look at the lower GU tract and the bladder.

I would suggest a referral to a urologist to discuss these options.
