Hydrocele

by mentalattica20, Nov 12, 2008 05:36PM
Hello,

I am 25 years old and have been diagnosed with hydroceles in both sides of the scrotum. The left is pretty much non-existent it just showed up in the ultrasound. My urologist said he didn't even know it was there other than by viewing the ultrasound. The right can be as large as a golf ball (maybe just slightly larger) when my scrotum is hanging, which is usually after a hot shower or when I am warm. When I am cold or nervous my scrotum contracts, that is the only time it really bothers me (it's contracted 85% of the day it seems). It seems as if the added size puts pressure on the left testicle (the non-affected one) causing a bit of discomfort. There is also a slight dull pain from time to time in the right side where the hydrocele is noticeable. There is also a very light discomfort in my groin. I hate to use the word pain, because I am not in agony. It's more of a feeling of pressure I suppose, very annoying and discouraging all the same.

The first urologist recommended against a hydrocelectomy because he views it as too small to operate on due to the risk involved. He told me to wait a while and see if it goes away on it's own which is unlikely. He suggested either way I should leave it alone unless it gets larger. That was 2 months ago. It is still here and roughly the same size. I got a second opinion from another urologist this week and with in 5 minutes we're scheduling a hydrocelectomy. When I asked if he recommends the surgery he replied "if it bothers you, yes."

I'm second guessing the surgery now because of the risk factors, having 2 conflicting opinions, and being completely terrified of any medical procedure that involves cutting any part of my body (especially my scrotum). I have never had surgery in my life. Both urologist seemed knowledgeable and convincing so now I'm not sure what to do.

I've read online at places such as mayoclinic.com, cnn.com, and a few other reliable mainstream websites that if left alone hydroceles in adults "often go away on their own." The word often has been used in various articles. My question is, how often do they resolve on their own? One website suggested that men under 65 with hydroceles usually go away on their own also.

It's been 2 months now, am I jumping the gun by getting the surgery? How long does it take for a hydrocele to resolve on it's own when they do?

Any input would be greatly appreciated and sorry if my post was too long winded.
