? I always thought that IC stabalized after a few years? I've tried sticking to the IC diet, I've tried some herbs and accupuncture. The accpuncture sent me to emergency...the Dr. said the needle hit a nerve...I read that accupuncture is 90% effective... I don't know what to try next. The wait to see a urologist in Canada is 6+ weeks....any suggestions till then?

Thank you for your questions.
IC (interstitial cystitis ) as you know is a diagnosis of exclusion. I assume you have had cystoscopy which showed glomerulations (fractured blood vessels) after hydrodistention , the hydrodistention helped your symptoms and bladder biopsies showed inflammation and mast cells in the bladder wall. A positive potassium test maybe considered pathopneumonic for IC by some urologist.
A medline search over the last four years combining antibiotics and Interstitial Cystitis as textwords fail to produce any articles showing a cause and effect relationship.
Late deterioration in symptoms is unusual for IC. 50% of patients report a spontaneous remission independent of treatment. An average of 80 months duration of IC before remission is reported. For more information please see the answers to Jen and Amir dated 2/10/98 and Beth on 2/6/98.
You report your IC symptoms have been atypical:
On first of reading your history, I wondered if you have been worked up for endometriosis of the bladder. Endometriosis temporally gets better with pregnancy. Another clue to your history is if your pain at the same time of your menstrual cycle?
If yes, I would seek a gynecologist for a second opinion to your IC diagnosis.
If you do have IC; have you tried Elmiron, DMSO, silver nitrate or a repeat hydrodistention? In your case, these treatments are definitely worth a try. They probably will not result in a trip to the emergency room.
