Ileostomy and Kidney Stones

My husband had a total colectomy almost twenty-six years ago leaving him with a permanent ileostomy.  A year later we moved to southern Arizona.  Although husband drinks copious amounts of fluids daily, he has had numerous kidney stones over the years.

He has had more than the recommended number of lithotripsys.  The procedure for the last stone involved a fiberoptics scope, burned out three lazers, and took more than an hour to crack the stone.

Husband has been dealing with pain, at times severe, from the latest stone for almost six months and is told by a stone clinic physician to just wait it out.  Needless to say, this pain is becoming increasingly debilitating.

Can you offer information on any studies specifically on treating ileostomates with kidney stones?  Are there treatment options that we should consider or even hope of curtailing the formation of stones?

Has intravenous hydration to increase the amount of fluid going through the kidneys ever been considered for ileostomates with stones?

Any information or advice would be sincerely appreciated.

Although possible, I am not aware of a connection between kidney stones and ileostomies.  

Prevention of the kidney stones can be considered, based on what they are made of.  For instance, calcium stones can be treated with thiazide diuretics, and uric acid stones can be treated with allopurinol.  

Hydration remains a mainstay of prevention.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician or urologist.
