Inability to empty bladder

by Regalhank, Nov 05, 2009 07:34PM
Male friend having difficulty emptying bladder--had to be catheterized by urologist.  Prostate and PSA apparently all right.  I guess his brain is not telling him when he needs to urinate and then when he gets a chance, he's so full he cannot empty entirely.  Is on Flomax but wants to know if there are some 'natural' remedies, supplements?  Is it possible for the bladder to stretch or expand too much?

Hi,

If you state that there is a poor signal from the brain causing the sphincters not to relax during urination catherization might be needed on a regular basis.

I was diagnosed with a neurogenic bladder which is a condition that you describe here. I use intermittant catherization to ensure that the bladder is completely emptied.

I normally use Flomax as well, I have not had much success using herbal alternatives.

All the best.

I'm having the same problem that your friend is having.  I am unable to feel when I have to urinate, which is cause me to hold urine.  I just had an indwelling cath placed today.  I'm supposed to have it till next Tuesday.  They are hoping I get my feeling back in that time and my bladder returns to it's normal size.

Hi,

In a case where the brain signal to the bladder sphyncters is impaired we most likely deal with a neurological problem.
From a urodynamis test they should be able to tell what the cause of this problem might be. In 1996 I underwent a urodynamics test which showed detrusor dysinergia (Not sure about the spelling). I had the test repeated 3 times with the same diagnosis.
It is believed that in my case this is due to a neuropathy of the peripheral and central nervous system.
It was then recommended to use intermittant self catherization. You will get used to this and it is not as bad as it sounds.
Ask your doctor about having a urodynamics test done.

All the best.
