Is Cipro the best treatment for Epididymitis?

About a year ago I had blood in my semen and urine, and pain in my left testicle.   After going to the Urologist and getting looked at I was diagnosed with Epididymitis and prescribed Ciprofloxicin.  My symptoms cleared up after about a week.

It is now about a year later, and I am having pain in my left testicle again.  I do not have health insurance and got a friend to prescribe Cipro for me to clear up my infection.  After reading the new black box warning on Cipro I am very nervous and reluctant to take it, mainly because of the reports of sudden tendon rupture.  I started taking Cipro a week ago. 6/5/09.  I noticed my energy to be low and my joint and tendons to be stiff and sore.  After a day or so of Cipro, my testicle pain was gone and I stopped taking the antibiotics because of the adverse reactions I was having.  About 3 days after stopping the medication the pain returned.  It is now 6/12/09 and by recommendation of my doctor, I am taking the Cipro again.  I told her I was concerned about the severe effects of Cipro, and asked if there were any other drugs that could be used.  She said another drug would have to be taken for longer, and that I should stick with the Cipro because chances are slim that my tendons will actually break.

I have reading a lot about Cipro and other fluoroquinolones today.  From what I can tell, this is a very dangerous drug.  It should be only used as a last resort for life threatening bacterial infections.  It seems a lot of people have suffered injury and many lawsuits are being conducted presently.

My question is, are there other antibiotic that I can switch to that will work?  Any advice would be very appreciated.

Hello,
Although ciprofloxacin is one of the best treatments of epididymitis, but if you have inhibiotions using it,then you can use cephalosporins(Ceftriaxone injection),Doxycycline or Azithromycin antibiotics.

Hope it helps.Take care and regards.

I slowly developed epydimitis..since I have felt disconfort in one side of the scrotum before and went away within days, I waited and waited but this time if got worse: thigh numbness, left testicle pain, nausea and below the belly button pain. I finally went to the urologist and after a brief examination he put me on Cipro 500mg for 2 weeks. After the 2 weeks I improved alittle but I was still in alot of disconfort. The urologist took me off of cipro and told me to wait and see if I recovered more!? which scared since I knew I was not cured. After 2 days a got worse again and called the doc....He put me on Bactrim for 2 weeks which really did not do anything for me...after bactrim he put me again on cipro and after 2 weeks a i developed prostatitis which is basically an infection in the prostate.  finally after 3 weeks i feel better but still not fully recoverd from epidymitis ....in sum... i have been 2 monthsn on antibiotics and only 75% better. this is a long process.

almost every drug has potential bad side effects, therefore we must consider the benefits of taking a certain drug.

In my case I would be dead if it had not been for the use of antibiotics. One of the worst for myself was flagyl. Not only did this drug cause me severe nausea, but it also harmed me in regards to a neurological condition. Flagyl made the neuropathy worse, though it was the only thing to clear up a bad infection.

Hi, I used to get hospitalized for epididymitis and got an IV antibiotics when Cipro would usually not get the infections under control. I think that one of them started with Retro. The rest I don't remember. Usually after about a week things started to get better. Later on I used to get orchitis and required hospital stays as well. I used to get it about every 3 or 4 months. After a vasectomy I no longer get it.

Worrier77, I used to be on Cipro regularly and still have to take it on and of. I have been on it for over 15 years now. The only thing that I have experienced is problems with the digestive system. I have many of sleepness nights due to abdominal cramping.
I take Cipro over the alternative. Without the use of antibiotics I should have been dead many times over.

Take care,

Ron

ciprofloxacine can totally ruin your cartilage and joints especially when take over a longer time. google it! i wouldnt take this stuff again. i only took it once and back then i wasnt aware of it.
i think it's a shame that doctors prescribe this so easily even when there are other ABs which could also be used.
