Kidney Infection

by Cathy__0__0, Jul 31, 1998 12:00AM
I am 41/2 months pregnant and have had a kidney infection
for the whole time. I have been warned that this is serious
and have been put on several forms of penicillin including
ones through IV. I am still experiencing pain, nausea, off
and on chills and sweats , aweful irregular bowl movements
[ going from constipated to Diarrehea],and I am so tired and
   scared of things happening.Help!!!!!!
Dear Kelli,
I think your doctors are giving you the correct medication to control your urinary tract infection from disrupting your pregnancy.  Infection of your kidney(pyelonephritis) is a serious condition particularly since you are pregnant.  Premature labor can be caused by infections especially bad ones like kidney infections..  The diarrhea is also a consequence of taking long term antibiotics.  The normal bacteria that reside in your GI tract are wiped out by the antibiotics often causing diarrhea.  As I see it, as long as you remain well hydrated and the fetus continues to develop normally, the current regimen of antibiotics are safe and necessary.  Lets prey they are effective and you have a good outcome.
I wish I could give you a better answer, but I can assure you your doctors are treating you well.
