Large Mass on Right Testicle After Spermatocelectomy

by Craig-Myrman, Feb 14, 1999 12:00AM

I had a posterior spermatocelectomy on the rt testicle 5 days ago.  The majority of the scrotal swelling has subsidded but the right testicle appears to have a major (2 1/2 inches) mass attached to it below the testicle.  This is the side that the spermatocele was removed.  It is very painful when I am standing but has no pain at all when laying down or sitting (inclined).  Is this normal?

Dear Craig ,
Thanks for your question.
Fever,  chills and pus draining form the incision would be signs of infection and would require urgent attention.  A swelling in the scrotum after surgery usually is a collection of blood ( hematoma) or fluid  which may take sometime to reabsorb ( if the latter reabsorbs at all).  The pain should get much better with rest .  Supportive underwear ( i.e., Jock strap ) ibuprofen, warm baths all can help with the pain of scrotal surgery.  A vertical position will keep the scrotum swollen. My guess is that you are experiencing normal discomfort following such surgery. You do need to call/see your doctor if your have significant concerns, after all I am working without a physical exam here.
More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its urban campuses by calling  (1 800 653 6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any physicians’ notes and lab test results that you  may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly.
