Loss of testicle from a vasectomy

by dlzinfla, Mar 13, 2009 11:56AM
How common is it to loose a testicle after a vasectomy? My husband had a vasectomy that we were told went fine even though there was some bleeding that required additional  stitches…4 days and 2 surgeries later his right testicle had to be removed due to no blood flow to his right testicle(the same side that was the bleeder) we were told a hematoma formed in the sheath that contains the veins and due to the hematoma that is why the blood flow was blocked, this was supoosedly corrected on Sunday in surgery but when rechecked on Tuesday it was still very limited so the decision was made to remove the testicle…I can not find any records of this happening to someone else. Do you have any thoughts?

Hi, I too lost a testicle after a vasectomy. Right after a vasectomy, I ended up with a hematoma on the left side. I was seen by a doctor who was filling in for our family doctor. She told me that it was nothing. One day later after my scrotum had become the size of a grapefruit she sent me back to the surgeon who did the vasectomy. He immediately performed an emergency surgery to remove the hematoma. 5 days later I went home again. There was a small hole in the left side of my scrotum that never closed. About one year later I ended up in our local hospital with a real bad case of orchitis. I was in the local hospital for about 5 days before they transferred me to the hospital where my urologist practised. I underwent emergency surgery to have my left testicle removed. I had ended up with a staph infection and due to infection the scrotum was left open since they did not know if the staph was under control. I spent another 7 days in an isolation room and at times they were unsure if I needed to be in the ICU.
After 7 days the infection ended and I was sent home with numerous antibiotics. The scrotum was left open and my wife had to pack it twice a day with saline soaked gauze.

It was hard for me to go after doctors for neglect since many were infolved. Even if I could have, I still would not have been able to prevent the loss of the testicle as well as the suffering involved. This should never have taken place. They should have transferred me to a urologist at the time of the first sighn of the hematoma. It could have saved the testicle.

I had to vasectomy to try and combat orchitis from infections in the prostate and kidneys. I used to end up with orchitis about every 3 to 4 months. Severing the vas deference would stop the infections from setteling in the testicles. I never thought that this could have resulted. A vasectomy should go without mistakes, however mistakes do happen. Getting a doctor to admit to it is much more difficult.

God bless,

Ron

Hi,

This is uncommon but a possibility. The doctors try their best but the procedure do have their adverse effects. I am sure that the doctors may have been forced to take this decision.

Please let us know if you would have any other questions.

I had a vasectomy nearly 3 years ago at that time my testicles seemed equal and never bothered me.  When I had the surgery under a local the anaesthetic failed in the procedure and there were moments of a lot of extreme pain. The op took nearly 50 minutes and involved 2 cuts although the Dr said he was only only go to one. From that moment onwards the pain never went away, I went back in the first few weeks about 4 times and told that it would settle down although I was prescribed some anti inflammatory tabs . I was given ultrasound at about 3 months and the consultant said that there was some varicolle and that the it could have been caused by the surgery or disturbed by it.
At 9 months I returned to surgeon who had done the surgery who was very dismissive he commented my left testicle was smaller but everything was normal for this stan recovery of Vasectomy. His dismissive attitude plus what I havge ie read ( eg Men who have problems turn out to be psychologically inadquote in one way or another) -  made be determined to just live with pain. I finally went my  GP  last week because the pain has been quite high for a long time. Unfortunately he said my left testicle was "mash" and only a quarter size. He left me no doubt that my left testicle was so damaged it would have to be removed as the blood supply had been compromised in his opinion beyond repair!
I'm quite angry and would really like to know how common loosing a testicle from Vasectomy surgery is and if so is it a suppressed factual risk!
