Major pain in right, lower back

  For the past 3-4 months I have been having an extremely difficult time sleeping for over 5 hours.  Usually by the 5th hour of sleep, there is enough pain in my lower right back to wake me up.  The most painful position is laying on my right side.  Sometimes I can find a position that relieves the pain, but rarely.  I've tried Ibuprofen, but that seems to aggrevate it even more.  The strange thing about it is that the pain goes away if I sit up or stand.  It's only when there is pressure on that side that it hurts.  I am just curious as to what this could be.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

The back pain you describe could be due to several reasons such as spine problems, musculoskeletal causes and other intraabdominal and retroperitoneal causes (such as kidney stone).  It is difficult to pinpoint the cause without examining you and getting a few investigations (urine test and x-rays).  Since this pain is positional (gets worse during certain position), it is most likely to be muscular or spinal.  However I would advise you to consult a physician to make an appropriate diagnosis.
