Medullary Sponge Kidney and Pregnancy

by heather122589, Dec 07, 2007 05:35PM
I was recently diagnosed with Medullary Sponge Kidney disease and I also recently found out I was pregnant. My mom told me that having this disease could complicate my pregnancy and she recommends I get an abortion. I would like to know if I don't have the baby now, will I still be able to get pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy in the future?

I have MSK. I have carried 3 children to full term without any problems. My doctor monitored my kidney function very carefully through the pregnancy but said as long as both kidneys were still functioning it would not affect my pregnancy. Good Luck!

HI and Welcome!
We do have an MSK support group on this board that might be a big help to you as well:

http://www.medhelp.org/forums/show/256?personal_page_id=30644

I also have MSK and had 5 children.  Though I was diagnosed after the birth of my kids, IC is something we are born with.  The problems I had in pregnancy were kidney and infections and stones.  I had to be put on a low level antibiotic through my first one but used naturals etc through the other 4. If you do not have bladder pain, you can drink cranberry juice etc.  Or take D-Mannose with is the part of cranberrry and blueberry that keep the bacteria from attaching.  This is available through most healthfood stores.

I had a stone during one pregnancy and they did one KUB ONLY and used a sonorgram for the checking my kidneys.  After the other pregnancies I made a large stone with them from taking the prenatals with the high about of calcium in them, even natural ones.  This maybe something to ask you doctor about since they may have an alternative they can suggest.  I do know that it is important to take Folic Acid during pregnancy since I have read that it can prevent birth defects!!  Of course thought talk to your doctor about anything you take even D-mannose.

I hope to see you join our support group there is a lot of info in the posts on the board as well as some great info and articles in the health pages.
