Megaureter

Megaureter

I am a 58 year old female who was diagnosed one year ago with megaureter after a large kidney stone was removed.  Recent tests show that my ureter is still grossly enlarged 17 months after surgery.  I have had every possible test done and there is no reflux or obstruction causing this condition.  My urologist insists I must have been born with this condition.  I am a former R.N. and find this difficult to believe since I never had any problems until I was in my 50's.

My question is:  Will this condition inevitably cause my kidney to fail?  I have no symptoms at all at present.  Is it possible that a very large stone could have caused my ureter to dilate and can it eventuallly return to normal?  I am desperate for answers.  Where would you consider the best urological center for me to be seen at?  I worry constantly about kidney failure although I feel well.  Am I overly concerned?

Thank you.

The main complications of megaureter is urinary tract infection, back pain, ureteral stones and a decline in kidney function.  I cannot quote percentages, but yes, it is possible to have kidney failure from this condition.

You may want to discuss with your urologist the best way to evaluate and prevent for this complication.  Serial measurement of creatinine and creatinine clearance can be considered.

If there are complications secondary to this, then surgical options are the most likely consideration - ureteral reimplanation can be an option.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
