My daughter had her MRI

by momoftwins92, Mar 14, 2008 07:54AM
Hi all, I had one response from VanessaMD....my daugher had the MRI on Tuesday am and it's not a renal lesion or kidney stone. It actually is one very small 5mm cyst. The dr asked about polycystic renal disease in my family and there is none on either side. He doesn't think she has it but wanted to check out everything. I asked how will we know if she has it and he said if she starts getting lots of cysts. He said this disease is cysts taking up more room than kidney. She has had the cyst (what we thought was a kidney stone)for almost 4 yrs and from what I understand she would have to have multiple and multiple cysts for it to be the disease. It has hardly grown for 4 yrs, so anyway, the dr wants to see her in 18 months for renal reflux and this renal cyst. What is your opinion about this? Thanks for your comment earlier.

Polycystic kidney (renal) disease (PKD) is an inherited disease.  There are multiple cysts present in both kidneys.  In the recessive form, it usually starts showing up in very early childhood (infants).  In the dominant form, it normally shows up by the time the person is 30, but can be much detected much earlier or later.  I was 45 when I was diagnosed with PKD and the radiologist wrote that there were "innumerable" cysts on both kidneys.  You can get more info at www.pkdcure.org.

If your daughter has a single, simple cyst that has not changed much in 4 years, I don't think it is anything to worry about.  The doctor is correct in waiting 18 months to recheck it since it does not seem to be causing any problems, but he needs to keep an eye on it anyway in case it changes.

I would worry more about a complex cyst than a simple cyst.  A complex cyst is more of an indicator of problems than a simple one.  If it is not a problem, then removing it is pointless.  Kidney surgery can be very painful.
