No sensation to urinate

Recently I had a TURP with a catheter installed for five weeks. When the catheter war removed I had some problems with painful urination. That problem has subsided, but now I never receive a signal from my body that I should urinate during the day. I do awake  many times at night  however with the urge to urinate.                                                Since I now urinate during the day on my own schedule without the urge, does this constitute a problem?

Hello fastesteddie,

For how long was the catheter left in place? Was there any complication post surgery? Usually the catheter is left in your bladder after the operation for a couple of days. The catheter is removed when the urine begins to run clear; this is usually within two to three days. There might be some delayed recovery as the nerves might be affected, which would take few more days to actually recover. Consult your urologist to rule out any infection, if any and if yes get proper antibiotic coverage.

The catheter was left in for five weeks because I had a staph infection that I caught during the "TURP".

How long would it usually take fot the nerves to get back to normal?

Thanks for any information you may provide.
