Pain in Rectum

My 68 year old mother is experiencing pain in her rectum which is worse when she sits down.  She describes it as a drilling feeling, sometimes feels like she is sitting on a ball and goes away when she stands.  Doctors cannot tell her what it is.  She's had a colonoscopy, ultrasounds, bloodwork, etc. and all is normal.  I've heard of a type of physio that you can have for this type of thing; however, having difficulty getting information.  She is going crazy with the pain so any help or similar stories would help.  Thanks.

Hello - thanks for asking your question.

Benign anorectal diseases, including fissures, abscesses, fistulas, and hemorrhoids, are common. The prevalence of specific disorders is difficult to estimate since almost any anorectal discomfort is often attributed to symptomatic hemorrhoids.

Another consideration would be pelvic floor dysfunction. The most common symptom of prolapse is a feeling of pressure or that something is protruding from the vagina. Patients frequently describe this is as feeling like they are sitting on an egg or complain of low backache or heaviness. This feeling is usually relieved by lying down, is less noticeable in the morning, and worsens as the day progresses.

You may want to discuss this suggestion with your personal physician or your mother's gynocologist for further evaluation.

I strongly suggest followup with your personal physician.

I stress that this answer is not intended as and does not substitute for medical advice - please see your personal physician for further evaluation of your individual case.

Thanks,
Kevin, M.D.
