Penile Pain

Penile Pain

My husband is 60 years old.  He has had prostatitis for more than 10 years and was given antibiotics on several occasions.  He had prostate cancer two years ago and recovered from surgery with little incontinence but still has challenges with sexual hardness.

His PSA's are low but the pain in his penis has returned and can me consistently moderate to severe in intensity.  His current internist has called it "referred" pain and the  only thing that seems to help are hot baths twice a day.  This pain can go on for unlimited months.

Do we need to get another (we've had three) diagnosis?
If it is in fact "referred pain" what can trigger it and how can he manage it  Thank You, Zo Byrnes

Chronic prostatitis can lead to the symptoms you describe.  A prostatic massage with subsequent analysis of the prostatic fluid can be considered.  Further evaluation can be done with a transrectal ultrasound to evaluate for any prostatic abscesses.

You can also consider a cystoscopy to evaluate for lower GU disorders that can lead to pain.

If the tests continue to be negative, and long-term antibiotic therapy has not been helping, you can consider other options like transurethral microwave therapy.

These options can be discussed with your urologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
