Penis Shape Change

by Reynolds-Young, Oct 07, 1998 12:00AM
I am a very healthy 54 year old...work out, don't smoke, play a lot of golf.  But, here's my story.......
My penis, when erect, has always been fairly straight with only a slight turn upward.  About a month ago, I noticed a more pronounce bend upward...on top about one inch below the head.  When soft, I can feel something fairly firm or grisely in the area of this new bend.  It is like where the blood flows during erection is not going to this area and, therefore, not filling to straighten the penis fully.  And, it sort of aches in the area of the bend during erection.  Any thoughts about this condition?  Needless to say, I am concerned about cancer...or, for that matter whatever is going on.
I hope I have made this clear.

Dear Mr. Young,
Your symptoms appear to be due to a disease known as Peyronie's disease.  It occurs in about 1% of men. It is not cancerous but causes fibrous plaque in the penis.  Since the plaques are inelastic and can not expand during erection, that part of the penis gets curved.
The etiology of this condition is not clear.  Several factors including minor trauma during intercourse, association with other excessive fibrous tissue diseases and diabetes has been implicated. This is a disease of middle age and usually presents with penile curvature and pain during erection and intercourse.
Treatment is usually symptomatic (medications and injections) until interference with intercourse or pain becomes incapacitating.  At that time several surgical procedures are available which attempt to correct the deformity.  However this condition at times is associated with impotence and patient may then require combined management for both curvature and impotence. You can find other posting from other men on this forum by using the site search function and searching the word Peyronie's.
