My 6 year old daughter has had a UTI for 5 weeks, we have completed 4 rounds of antibiotics and are currently taking 2 more. Each time the culture returns with no resolution, and the bacteria are just as high as before the antibiotic. Any suggestions? E. coli is the bacteria, >100,000 colonies with each culture.
In addition, we had an abdominal ultrasound which showed the anatomy was normal, but a renal cyst was noted. What does this idicate?
Was the ultrasound able to describe whether the cyst is a simple renal cyst? Was the physician able to discuss the results with you?
A simple renal cyst in a child with no asssociated symptoms may be monitored radiographically and may not need further intervention once the possibility of other underlying conditions have been ruled out. An ultrasound examination may be able to tell if the cyst requires further evaluation ( given that other structures are normal).
At this point I can not tell if the recurrent infections may be due to the presence of the cyst. Further evaluation may be necessary to determine the cause of the infections. Make sure that contamination is minimized during urine sampling and handling.Adequate fluid intake is also beneficial.Discuss with the physician the need for a scan .
