Please Help!

Can you please explain me the difference between Interstitial Cystitis and Cystitis. I have undergone a Urine Culture test some 20 days back and was detected with 2+ bacteria. Urologist diagnosed me with Cystitis-UTI on the basis of that culture.

But the left lower abdominal pain still occurs along with the frequency of urination which is too much. I void almost 40 times in day and night together. I want to know whether am suffering from IC. My infection had started before 2 months.

If the urine culture shows bacteria does that mean I don't have IC?

Many Thanks
Bella

Bella,
As a patient that has not only chronic infection but also Interstitial Cystitis I hope I can help you!
IC is a chronic irriated bladder syndrome. IC is very painful but there are many great coping tools available!  According to the study by Dr. Warren this year as many as 1/3 of IC patients said there IC started with a bladder infection.  There are some doctor who do believe it may have a bacterial chronic infection cause.  Dr. Hultgren in St. Louis has recently found biofilm with in the bladder wall.  The link to his article is on the Biofilm ONline website!  My URO believes many IC patients are actually misdiagnosied chronic infection patients.  That is why all bladder symptom patients are FIRST treated with long term antibiotics.  Many patients completely recover!  Those of us who don't he then begins IC treatments.  I am one of the few with both... my infection is in my kidneys!

That said whether or not IC has a bacterial cause or connection is a highly debated topic!  I personally believe that there are multiple causes or injuries, which is why finding what works is very individual!!!

The is a lot of IC help and information out there. The IC Survival Guide by Dr. Robert Moldwin is a great place to start!  YOu can also contact the ICA- Interstitial Cystitis Association, or the IC Network, both have lots and lots of information on IC!  Feel free to pm me with any questions as well!  I work with IC patients in Missouri and Arkansas and am working on networking them!

A good place to start is to go to the Elmiron website.  Elmiron is the only FDA approved medication for IC.  They have the IC questionaire that can give you an idea whether or not you have IC as well... again chronic infection can cause the same symptoms but should improve on antibiotic treatment!

I hope that helps some... Had a crazy day and soo hurt more the usual tonight so forgive me if this doesn't sound right!

Hi Bella,

It's Lamsa.   Thanks for helping the others who suffer.   As you know I am not a doctor but I just returned from my primary care from a impromto consultation.  I had conflicting perspectives with my specialist.  I needed my primary care to help sort it all out. I fully trust him because he proves his perspective instead of being the wise doctor while I am merely a suffering patient.

*he said medicine and attorneys are two professions who truly practice. We are not always in the present state of perfection*  He said apprehension is a good thing! Its not doubt but the need for verification.

You said you were treated by your urologist.   You may want to consult with your primary care or gynecologist before returning to your urologist.

This is what I found out.

Cystitis is the most common type which is caused by coliform bacteria being transferred from the bowel through the uretha into the bladder.

Interestitial Cystitis is consdidered more of an injury to the bladder resulting in constant irritation and rarely involves infection.  IC patients are often misdiagnosed with UTI/Cystitis.  Cultures are not the last or final authority. It may be auto immune where the immune system attacks the bladder.

Though Rare this condition is called Esoinphilic Cystitits which is diagnosed by biopsy.  This happens when the bladder wall is infiltrated with a high number of eosinophilis (the white blood cells of the immune system which are responsible for combating infection and parasites) In short they turn on you.

Call your uroglogist and thank them for there efforts.  Tell them you suffering and this what you found out.  Encourage them to do there best work in you.  So that you can be whole and tell the others who are in great need.  Doctors need success just like you and me.  To do good and be good is as mandatory as breathing.

Peace to your spirit, mind and body. Continue to Inspect what you Expect!
