Post OP for varicocele

by Jstretcher, Feb 28, 2006 12:00AM
I had a varicocelectomy 2.5 weeks ago and had a few questions on my recovery. I had a varicocele on both sides, one very large and the other large. I am still swollen, about the same as I was 2 days after the operation, where the cuts were made and in the scrotum. Is this normal to still be very swollen this long. I dont have any serious pain although a few tinges and tugs and being very uncomfortable because of the swelling. Also I have hard knots or spots in my scrotum that the doctor says is blood that the body needs to reabsorb. Is this normal and how long should it take to go back to normal size? and is there anything I can do to help the swelling go down or make it feel better like warm a pad or something? also am I hurting anything by walking even though the swelling is still there.

Also my scrotum skin is very sensitive in the upper area and hurts when I rub it and is very uncofortable when Im walking. I think this is just a couple of raw areas that have been rubbing against my jock strap but I wanted to make sure. If so what can I do to make it better.

Thank you so much for you time and help

I am not a urologist, so my insight in this question is limited.

Scar tissue or post-op swelling and changes can vary from patient to patient.  The two complications to look out for are bleeding and infection - which I cannot discern over the itnernet.

If there is any concern about the post-op site, I would have your urologist look at it.  It is not advisable to take telephone advice - since the urologist cannot examine it over the phone.

If there is presence of pus, redness, or fever, I would seek more urgent medical attention (i.e. an evaluation in the emergency room).

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
