this answered all my question! and you're right tom, there isn't much about this topic online. I'm one week post-op and I feel so down coz I thought my surgery was a failure since I can still the dilated vein and the scrotum looks like nothing has change. anyway Im gonna give it time like you guys did. Im seeing my doctor next week and hopefully he can give me some answers also. But tom one question for you, approximately how long did the vein and scrotum went back to normal size? i know people heal differently but i just wanna know how was your healing. thanks!
Saw I still had this bookmarked so just popped in for an update in case anyone reads this. About a year after surgery, any excess skin caused by the varicocele has receded and there is no indication it ever existed. Also, there was occasional mild discomfort from time to time even after the first few months, but that also has dissipated and I don't even think about it anymore.
Yea, I think im having the biggest problem with inflammation / blood flow.
Aspirin seems to help / Ibuprofen
My surgery was about 3 1/2 months ago - May 2nd. My scrotum does not become red (in fact, it never did after the first week or so, except where my supportive briefs would chafe sometimes).
The pain came back pretty heavy after last week's rafting, but about a week later it's mostly gone again.
How long has it been since your procedure?
Does your scrotum become red ? and feel a bit?
Just a followup the pain had completely subsided to the point I had forgotten about it until today, but I also spent the whole weekend whitewater rafting, so I don't think that's surprising. The appearance seems to be closer to normal as well, so I'm feeling like things are well on track. Hope this info gives you or whoever reads this some encouragement - there's not a lot online about this topic other than pregnancy topics. Hope you are doing well!

Thank you for your responses to my thread, I appreciate you taking the time to answer all of my questions and give me full responses. I think that this post/topic will answer alot of questions for men that have had/or having the same thing that I have. You defiantly are very knowledgable, once agian thank you.

Hi,
Sorry about the delay in responding to your post.
The healing of all structures involved and restoration or improvement in sperm count following varicocelectomy takes about 4 months on an average.
Some individuals may continue to experience varying amounts of discomfort for as long as 6 months from the time of the procedure.
Since you have already finished your first follow-up visit after the procedure and your urologist did not detect any abnormalities, there is no cause for worry.
The fluid collection in the scrotum can just be an effect of the varicocelectomy. And scrotal fluid collection does take time to resolve.
The debris could be due to infection or just inflammation related, but the levaquin will take care of any infection if present.
The veins would feel swollen for a few weeks from the procedure and any inflammation may make them seem swollen, but that settles down over time and the veins will reduce to their normal size once the irritation and inflammation settle down.
I think you are doing all that is needed to ensure adequate healing and avoidance of any strenuous physical exertion, such as carrying weights, would further aid healing.
Regards
I went to the urologist, and had a post-surgery sonogram. Went just a few days ago and he said that there was very "little" liquid substance around my testicles. And for some odd reason a little debris around my scrotum. He gave me some Levaquin and told me that possibly this could be caused by an infection. He didnt give me a time-range or anything just said that he wants a follow-up in 1 months time. Iv read toms post and about my veins they are swolllen but im sure those are just the cut ones. Dr. Smitha, is this normal? whats the time frame?
I also just had a varicolectomy on one side. I had two reasons: pain and sensitivity to heavy touch, and also a sort of burning sensation periodically. The burning sensation continued, and as it turned out, that was caused by my supportive underwear. A small piece of skin was getting trapped under the elsastic, and as I moved it was causing a rash... didn't discover that until after the surgery. Anyway, that was easy to fix. Two months later, I don't feel any pain on a day when I wear underwear, but I just spent the weekend mostly swimming and there is soreness again. My doctor disregards it as "mild discomfort" and can't give me any certainty about recovery time. A guy I talked to who had a similar operation told me it was a couple of months before the pain was mostly gone, which is about where I am, and about a year before things were completely back to normal, so I'm giving it more time. Meanwhile, the appearance of the varicocele itself appears to be about the same size, and there is a new vessel that has expanded to handle the re-routed pressure. My doctor says it will take "some time" for the old vein to reduce to normal and the blood to be rerouted. There doesn't seem to be much else online of help. I'm just giving it a little time, then I'll go back for another look or second opinion. Hope this info helps!
Hi,
Argine and ornithine are amino acids that induce some amount of wound healing and bone repair by inducing growth hormone secretion.
"Arginine has so far appeared to be free of obvious side effects, although some doctors are concerned that increases in growth hormone triggered by arginine could overwork the pancreas.
Individuals with kidney or liver disease should consult their nutritionally oriented doctor before supplementing with arginine. Individuals with herpes (either cold sores or genital herpes) should not take arginine supplements, because arginine can stimulate replication of the virus. Add Lysine (500 - 1000 mg) along with Arginine can help with cold sores cause by herpes infection.
Large amounts of arginine in animals can both promote10 and interfere with cancer growth.11 In preliminary research, high intake (30 grams per day) of arginine has increased cancer cell growth in humans.12 On the other hand, in people with cancer, arginine has been found to stimulate the immune system.13 At this time it remains unclear whether arginine is dangerous or helpful for people with cancer.
Arginine works with ornithine in the synthesis of growth hormone"

You can add cod liver capsules to your supplement list as these contain amino acids that are specific for action at the brain and nerve level.
No, it does not appear to be a skin problem, but if the itching is not subsiding with natural emollients you can try local application of gentamicin or neomycin ointments.

I have started taking,
L-Arginine (500mg) & L-Ornithine (250mg) twice a day.
Also :
Multi vitamins
Is this something that you would recommend?
Do you think this could be some type of skin problem?
Hi,
It depends on the type and extent of nerve damage.
Bruising and mild damage will be rectified with treatment over sometime, as nerve cells regenerate very very slowly.
If blood supply to a region is impaired, it will need to be corrected to fix the problem and this should be done at the earliest.
Improving your diet to include vitamin C, A, B-complex, and E has been known to improve healing.
Some essential amino acids are also crucial in healing.
It is best to include natural sources of these micronutrients in your diet instead of supplemental preparations.

Is nerve damage fixable? Or is this something that one would have to live with?
Hi,
Nerve damage could manifest as aggravation of pain symptoms on exposure to cold.
Similarly, compromised blood supply due to blood vessel injury becomes more marked on exposure to cold and can also increase pain symptoms.
Yes, a doppler sonogram would show up any abnormalities in blood supply.
You can sit in a hot bath for 10-15 min daily so as to derive some pain relief.
Do keep us posted on your progress.

By inflammation do you mean pain or redness? or both?
It's both, it get really deep red and it is very sensitive if i move or touch it hurt's.
If it was nerve damage wouldnt it hurt all the time? Not only when im in a colder area? If im in a really hot area and im hot it's very mild and i hardly notice it.
I went to my urologist "Robert G. Pugach", going to have another sonogram hopefully that shows something or at least what could possibly be causing the problem.
Hi,
By inflammation do you mean pain or redness? or both?
Post varicocelectomy, pain subsides in about 10 days to 2 weeks.
If you are still having pain after a month, you need to discuss this with your surgeon to evaluate any possible injury to related nerves.
Meanwhile,
Sit in a hot bath for 10-15 min twice daily.
Take antiinflammatory medicines.
And keep scrotum elevated while at rest to reduce the swelling.
Do keep us posted on your doubts and progress.
